The Assassination of Peshawa Narayan Rao

              Portrate of Peshawa Narayan Rao

Murder of Narayanrao Peshwa was a particularly difficult episode in the reign of Maratha Empire, second only to the Panipat Third War. All the diplomats and powerful noblemen and ministers in Pune were perplexed at sheer cruelty and blatancy of the gruesome incidence.

The assassination of Peshwa Narayan Rao took place on August 30, 1773 in Pune, Maharashtra. The 18 year old Peshwa of the Maratha Confederacy was murdered during the Ganesh Chaturthi Festival, which took place from August 21–31. The assassination was plotted by his uncle Raghunath Rao (Raghobadada ) and his wife Anandibai.

Raghunath Rao wanted to remove his teenage nephew and become the Peshwa (Prime Minister). On the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi, assassins entered Shaniwarwada to assassinate Narayanrao. Despite his attempts to flee for his life, the merciless Gardi assassins mercilessly killed him, tearing him to shreds. His mutilated remains were then dumped into the river. Narayan Rao’s death is the bloodiest chapter in Indian history, bringing dishonour to Peshwa Bajirao I’s proud legacy. It is said that Narayan Rao screamed for help to his uncle, ‘Kaka maala vachva’ (Save me uncle), but his crafty uncle Raghobadada ignored his pleas. Narayan Rao’s mortal remains were never cremated according to Hindu tradition. It is believed that the spirit of Narayan Rao still haunts the ruins of Shaniwar Wada and his cries can still be heard.

              Chief Justice Ramshatri Prabhune

After the death of Narayan Rao, his uncle Raghunath Rao was made Peshawa.  Ram Shastri Prabhune was the Chief Justice of Maratha Empire.  He found a letter signed by Raghunath Rao which he ordered capture Peshawa Narayan Rao.  Chief Justice of Maratha Empire Ramshastri Prabhune ordered the death sentence on Raghobadada for Narayanrao's murder but sentence was never carried out as Raghobadada was made Peshawa.  Barbhai council which was responsible to save the Maratha Empire from moral and political decline ordered a war against Peshawa Raghobadada. After Raghobadada, Narayan Rao's son Sawai Madhavrao was made Peshawa.

War And Peace

Ukrainian Refugees Today it has been eleven days to the War on Ukraine by Russia. There is no ceasefire yet and Russian forces are marching towards the capital Kyiv. It is the invasion of a sovereign and democratic nation by Russia. Western nations failed to protect Ukraine. Over 1.4 millions Ukrainians have fled the country and took shelter in neighbouring countries such as Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria and in some other European countries.  I was watching a video of one Ukrainian woman who was weeping loudly. She was saying, "Why is this war and for what? Why we are forced to leave our country, own house, brothers and parents?" Any prudent and kind person will certainly cry after watching the videos of fleeing Ukrainians. Russians are destroying their country with bombs. The world is watching this tragedy and doing nothing.  Nothing is more painful than war. Families get apart and someone lose their loved one. War destroy everything. War i...
